Vertical vs. Horizontal Balers
Vertical balers are the upright machines in the back room of grocery stores, restaurants, and retail shops. Someone loads the chamber by hand, closes the door, and the platen presses down. Horizontal balers are the bigger conveyor- or hopper-fed machines at distribution centers and recycling operations, pushing cardboard sideways and tying off bales continuously. They’re different sizes, but they fail in the same places:
- Cylinder seals that leak or let the platen drift down under its own weight
- Platen guides and wear strips that let the platen rock and bind
- Chamber doors and latches bent from being forced shut on an overfilled load
- Cracked welds in the chamber walls and around the cylinder mounts
- Hydraulic hoses and fittings cooked by heat in un-air-conditioned back rooms
